Ford has formally proposed its Ranger and Ranger Super Duty pickup trucks as candidates for the UK’s Light Mobility Vehicle (LMV) program.
Ford is seeking to strengthen its position in the defense market by formally pitching the Ranger family of pickup trucks, to the UK’s Ministry of Defence. Working alongside General Dynamics Land Systems UK and engineering consultancy Ricardo, Ford aims to compete for the British Army’s Light Mobility Vehicle requirement with military-modified Ranger and Ranger Super Duty models.[1]
What makes the Ranger Super Duty particularly attractive is its combination of capability and simplicity. Engineered for demanding work environments, the vehicle features a reinforced chassis, upgraded suspension, increased Gross Vehicle Mass (4500 GVM) and Gross Combined Mass (8000 GCM), as well as enhanced towing and payload capability. These upgrades make it well suited for transporting troops, equipment, communications systems, and specialist mission kits while operating in challenging conditions.
The proposal is built around the use of commercial vehicles rather than purpose-built military platforms. According to Ford and its partners, this approach could deliver cost savings, improve vehicle availability, simplify maintenance, and make spare parts easier to obtain. The shared architecture across the global Ranger lineup is also expected to reduce training requirements and streamline operational support. Leveraging a mass-produced platform also gives defense operators access to an established support network and proven durability developed through years of commercial use.
Ford Europe President Jim Baumbick stated that the partnership offers more than just vehicles, emphasizing long-term service, support, and parts availability to ensure military units remain mobile and mission-ready. The consortium also highlighted that defense organizations increasingly need affordable, scalable solutions rather than expensive, low-volume bespoke vehicle programs.
