The Ford Ranger Super Duty is one step closer to serving with the British Army.
Following a competitive down-selection process, a Ford-led consortium has been chosen by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) to advance to the next phase of the Light Mobility Vehicle (LMV) program, a major procurement effort that will replace the Army’s aging fleet of Land Rover and Pinzgauer-based tactical vehicles
Ford’s proposal is being delivered alongside General Dynamics Land Systems UK (GDLS-UK) and Ricardo, building on the proven capabilities of the Ford Ranger platform and the recently introduced Ranger Super Duty. Together, the partners aim to develop a scalable family of military mobility vehicles capable of supporting a wide range of operational requirements.
Seven Teams Remain in the Running
The UK MoD has narrowed the competition to seven teams that will move forward into the trials phase. For Ford and its partners, the next phase offers an opportunity to demonstrate how the Ranger Super Duty can be adapted to meet military operational requirements.
The Ford-led team will be required to prepare and deliver three vehicle variants for evaluation:
- General Purpose Vehicle (GPV)
- Tactical Mobility Vehicle (TMV)
- Battlefield Ambulance (BFA)
The MoD is expected to provide approximately three weeks’ notice before vehicle delivery is required. Following delivery, the vehicles will undergo competitive trials and evaluation. A final down-selection and initial rollout contract are expected in spring 2027, with initial operational capability anticipated between 2029 and 2030.
Supporting the Next Generation of Army Mobility
The LMV programme forms part of the UK’s wider Land Mobility Programme and is intended to deliver a common family of modern tactical vehicles for the British Army. The selected platform will ultimately support nine mission variants, ranging from utility and troop transport roles to command-and-control, ambulance and mission systems applications.
For Ford and its partners, reaching the trials stage is an important milestone and further demonstrates the adaptability of the Ranger architecture. Already trusted around the world in demanding commercial environments, the Ranger Super Duty will now be assessed alongside some of the defence sector’s most established mobility platforms as the British Army evaluates its future light vehicle fleet.
