Ford Ranger Super Duty 6×6 Mission-Ready Variant Demonstrates New Levels of Fleet Capability

How much capability can be built into a midsize truck platform?

A six-wheeled Ford Ranger Super Duty mission-ready variant recently showcased as part of a UK Ministry of Defence vehicle proposal provides a compelling example of how manufacturers are expanding the capabilities of modern fleet vehicles.

Developed as part of Ford’s broader military vehicle proposal, the Ranger Super Duty demonstrates how the Ranger platform can be adapted for demanding operational environments without compromising the versatility expected of a midsize pickup.

The mission-ready vehicle is based on the HEX 6×6 conversion from Ricardo, which is partnering with Ford in support of the Ministry’s Light Mobility Vehicle program. Unlike conventional 6×6 conversions that often require extensive chassis modifications, the HEX system utilizes a bolt-on architecture designed around a chassis-cab configuration. This approach helps simplify installation, supports multiple body configurations, and may reduce vehicle downtime during fleet modifications and lifecycle upgrades.

Beyond its distinctive appearance, the additional axle delivers meaningful capability gains. The conversion increases payload capacity to as much as 3,800 kilograms (8,377 pounds), significantly expanding the vehicle’s ability to carry personnel, equipment, tools, communications systems, medical gear, or mission-specific payloads. For fleet operators, that additional carrying capacity may reduce the number of vehicles needed for certain missions while improving operational efficiency in remote locations.

The HEX system’s modular, bolt-on design is a key fleet advantage. Because it requires no permanent modifications to the base Ranger Super Duty, the 6×6 conversion can be removed and transferred to another vehicle, helping operators maximize asset utilization and extend the value of specialized fleet investments across successive vehicle lifecycles.

The concept also aligns closely with the Ranger Super Duty‘s emphasis on durability, payload capability, and severe-duty applications. Its chassis-cab foundation also provides opportunities for specialized upfits ranging from communications and command modules to service bodies and equipment carriers.

The emphasis on operational durability reflects feedback gathered from end users. As Jim Baumbick, President of Ford Europe, noted:

“I spent time with soldiers and operational teams, the people who will depend on these vehicles in the field. Their requirements are clear: a vehicle they can count on in the moments that matter. Reliable under load. Capable across difficult terrain. Ready to perform, mission after mission. That is why Ford is bringing Ranger and Ranger Super Duty to the UK LMV competition.”

Whether or not Ford secures the contract, the Ranger Super Duty 6×6 mission-ready variant provides a compelling example of how manufacturers are expanding the capabilities of midsize trucks. With a payload rating of up to 3.8 tonnes, a modular bolt-on architecture, a transferable conversion system, and selectable six-wheel capability, it highlights the growing importance of adaptable, capability-driven vehicle platforms in demanding fleet environments.
